Hellboy, Simpsons take Manhattan

The monster runs amok in ‘Criminal Macabre.’

Area residents Mike Mignola, creator of the comic book and movie hero “Hellboy,” and Richard Starkings, creator of the intelligent and action-packed “Elephantmen” comic, will be on hand at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach for the 10th annual Free Comic Book Day Saturday, May 7.

On Free Comic Book Day, big-time publishers distribute freebies written and illustrated exclusively for release on the big nationwide geek holiday. At the Bug, each visitor will get at least a couple free comics.

Among the freebies will be a special book that is half Steve Niles’ “Criminal Macabre” and half the highly regarded “Baltimore,” by Mignola, who makes his home in Manhattan Beach. DC Comics megastar Green Lantern and Marvel’s Captain American and Thor will also be the subject of free comics as well.

Appearing at the Bug – mostly from noon to 3 p.m. – along with Mignola and Starkings will be Niles, Joshua Williamson of the all-ages Sketch Monsters free comic, Chris Yost of TV’s “Avengers,” “Simpsons” artist Phil Ortiz, the Wonder Woman look-alike from Hollywood Boulevard; and Joe Benitez of “Lady Mechanika,” who will be there 3 to 5 p.m.

The Comic Bug is located at 1807 Manhattan Beach Blvd., a few doors west of Aviation Boulevard. For more see freecomicbookday.com or thecomicbug.com. ER
