Costa, Redondo begin boys tennis playoffs

Four teams will represent the Bay League, including champion Palos Verdes who earned the second seed, when the CIF Southern Section Division 1 boys tennis championships begin today with wild-card matches.

After beating Redondo in a one-match playoff, Mira Costa (12-10) travels to face Marmonte champion Calabasas (18-0) in the first round on Wednesday. All matches with the exception of the final are slated to start at 3 p.m.

Second round action will be held Friday, the quarterfinals on Tuesday, the semifinals Tuesday, May 24 and the finals on Wednesday, June 1 at the Claremont Club.

Redondo (12-10) earned an at-large berth and plays at Loyola (6-8) today. The winner will travel to fourth-seeded Santa Barbara (18-3) on Wednesday.

Palos Verdes (14-0) will host the Dos Pueblos-Simi Valley wild-card winner in the first round while Bay runner-up Peninsula (14-6), the seventh-seeded team, hosts Campbell Hall (6-7) on Wednesday.

In Division 2, Prep champion Chadwick (8-5) will most likely host seventh-seeded El Dorado who faces Righetti in a wild-card match today.

In Division 3, Pioneer champion South Torrance (15-1) hosts No. 10 Lakewood (14-5) in the opening round while El Segundo (10-9) travels to seventh-seeded St. Margaret’s for its first-round match.

Del Rey champion Bishop Montgomery (11-7) will host the Chaffey-Colton winner in its first-round match.
