Beach Cities Sports: Basketball, Running, Swimming, Volleyball and more

The GU10 Sparkling Unicorns won the 23rd Annual Downey Memorial Open Soccer Tournament. Competing with no substitutes, the team went undefeated, giving up only one goal the entire tournament. Basketball

The HAX / ARC Youth Basketball League is holding registration for Recreation and Travel Team divisions. Open to boys and girls grades 1-8, the league begins Sept. 17-19. Teams and individuals may sign up. Deadline is Sept. 1. Player Evaluation Nights will be held Sept 7 and 9 (1st – 4th grade, 6-7 p.m.;  5th-8th grades, 7-8 p.m.).  Aquatics

Due to popular demand, Beach Cities Swimming (BCS), located at RedondoUnionHigh School, is expanding open public swim. Hours are 1-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Lap Swim is available from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m.  Open Swim and Lap Swimming are $3 for Redondo residents and $4 for non residents. After successfully putting more than 500 children through lessons this summer, BCS has added a Monday-through-Thursday session from August 15-25. Classes start on the hour and half-hour. Southern California Aquatics (SCAQ) has begun a Masters Swim Program at the new Redondo Union High School pool with Tuesday and Thursday workouts 5:30-6:30 a.m. and 8-9 p.m. Free introductory workouts are offered. Visit www.swim.net/scaq and click the Free Workout tab at the top.

Running

Registration is open for the American Cancer Society Relay For Life Beach Cities to be held from 9 a.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Sunday at AltaVistaElementary Schoolin Redondo Beach. Supporting Redondo and Hermosa Beachcommunities, the family-oriented event helps raise funds to help eliminate cancer while celebrating the lives of those who have faced the disease. Volleyball

The 5th Annual Kim Blankenship Memorial 4-Woman Volleyball Tournament will be held Sunday starting at 9 a.m. at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Entry fee for the High School Division (6 player max) and Women’s Division ($10 per player after 6 players) is $150 per team. The 2nd Annual Lady Seahawks Volleyball Tournament will be held Friday, July 29 at 2 p.m. in the RedondoUnionHigh Schoolgym. All varsity players, family, alumni and coaches are welcome. Teams consist of 5-7 players with men hitting from the back row only. Player fee of $10 includes t-shirt and drinks. Deadline to register is July 26. The 17th annual Smackfest co-ed 4’s tournament will be held Saturday in Hermosa Beach. The event benefits So Cal Foundation for Children (SCFC) which raises funds for scholarships, education, guidance and athletic opportunity to underprivileged youth. Registration and volunteer positions are now open for the United States Youth Volleyball League (USYVL) Fall Season. The 8-week league in Hermosa Beachat SouthParkwill run from September until November. The USYVL is also looking for volunteer coaches, site directors, and clinicians (volleyball instructors). Olympic gold medalist and former professional beach volleyball star Eric Fonoimoana will be holding anEliteBeachVolleyballAcademyfor two weeks at the south side of the Hermosa Beach Pier. The goal of the camp is to produce Division 1 talent for girls to earn a beach scholarship and boys to become a better indoor player by becoming a better-rounded player. Open to boys and girls, the Academy runs July 25-28. Ages 8-11 meet from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.; ages 12-18 from 12-3 p.m. Registration is available through the city ofHermosa Beach. 

Boys and girls ages 8 to 18 years old are invited to take part in Beach Cities Volleyball’s Summer Indoor Volleyball Program. The program will be held in July and August allowing players of all skill sets, beginner to advanced, to have fun and improve their volleyball skills. Each week-long camp features a 5-star coach-to-player ratio and lunch or dinner for full-day participants. Full-day and half-day programs are available. Week 2:  July 25-29, WestchesterParkor Christ Lutheran Gym (Palos Verdes); Week 3: Aug. 1-5, Rolling Hills Prep Gym (Torrance); Week 4: August 8th – 12th at Rolling Hills Prep Gym (Torrance); Week 5: Aug. 15-19, VistamarHigh School (El Segundo). Fitness

AdventurePlex, 1701 Marine Ave., Manhattan Beach is offering its Open Rock Wall and Ropes Course on Saturdays from 12-3 p.m. (Rock Wall is also open Sundays from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.). Whether a single child, the whole family, or just a group of friends (Ages 5 and up for rock wall, 8 and up for ropes course), the course provides challenges of solving problems and overcoming obstacles. Groups of seven will start every hour and will take approximately 45 minutes to complete the courses. Advance registration is recommended. Cost is $8-$20 depending on activities.
