City of Manhattan Beach: Pool Lifeguard, Exam No. 11-005

The Parks Recreation Department with the City of Manhattan Beach is now accepting applications for the 2011 Fall Season Program. The City of Manhattan Beach aquatics program provides patrons with swimming activities which includes teaching swimming techniques in a safe environment. The duration of the program is Friday, September 9, 2011 through Saturday, December 3, 2011 at the Begg Pool facility. This position may be required to work shifts, weekends and holidays.

Hours:  Part-time positions will not work over 960 hours per fiscal year.

Job Functions: The listed tasks are essential for this position and may include, but are not limited to, the following: Maintain a constant and close surveillance of persons in and around the pool; enforce safety rules and regulations and maintain order in the pool area; rescue swimmers; administer first aid; react and employ established American Red Cross techniques to rescue persons as necessary; keep accurate daily records of pool temperature, chlorine and chemical levels; help with class attendance records, and other related factors; perform light maintenance duties on the pool and grounds to maintain a clean and safe pool area; assist with swimming instruction as directed. May be required to work a varied schedule, which may include days, evenings, weekends and holidays. Employees will be required to wear a uniform while on duty.

Qualifications: Training and Experience: Must be at least 16 years old and have current American Red Cross certification including Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR cards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must have general knowledge of pool safety and exercise personal judgment, tact, and maturity to enforce pool rules of contact and be able to maintain presence of mind in emergency situations. Must be able to communicate verbally and in a clear and concise manner; and be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Must be able to pass initial and follow-up tests of safety and pool procedures as well as successfully complete backboard drills and CPR reviews.

Physical Demands And Working Conditions:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee physically must be able to react quickly to lifesaving emergencies; pull people out of the water; administer first aid; and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee will work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
