Costa, Redondo teams run to CIF cross country finals

The cross country programs from Mira Costa and Redondo enjoyed success at the CIF Southern Section/Ford Division 2 prelims with both girls and boys teams from each school advancing to the finals at Mt. San Antonio College on Saturday.

In usual fashion, a tight pack of Redondo girls held off opponents as the Sea Hawks won their heat with a team time of 1:26:17. Lyndsey Mull (3rd, 16:52), Kayla Ferron (4th, 16:52) and Rachel Bush (5th, 16:59) led the charge for Coach Bob Leetch’s squad.

Cara Ulizio (11th, 17:32), Anique Villegas (29th, 18:02), Alexis Thibodeau (32nd, 18:16) and Nicole Pederson (59th, 19:21) contributed to the win for Redondo, ranked third behind Simi Valley and Saugus entering the post season.

Mira Costa’s girls placed second in their heat behind Simi Valley. Kelli Sugimoto finished third with a time of 16:52. Other Mustangs contributing were Jenna Tong (10th, 17:24), Sarah Locke-Henderson (22nd, 17:58), Abby Hong (25th, 18:16), Kellie Jeong (29th, 18:19), Yvette Sandoval (39th, 18:34) and Lauren Inouye (41st, 18:42).

In Division 3, Palos Verdes advances after winning its heat and in Division 4, El Segundo (2nd) and Bishop Montgomery (3rd) advanced to the finals.

Vistamar finished third and Chadwick placed fourth in their respective heats in Division 5.

Evan Malone-White earned a 9th-place finish with a time of 14:59 to lead Redondo’s boys team to a second-place finish in its Division 2 heat. The Sea Hawks were helped by Tyler Caracoza (15th, 15:07), William Tait (25th, 15:23), Garrett Klatte (34th, 15:36), Alex Guzman (35th, 15:37), Takehiro Yamaya (45th, 15:51) and Carlos Suarez (57th, 16:05).

Mira Costa’s boys team placed second in its heat to Loyola, the second-ranked team in Division 2. The Mustangs are ranked No. 10 behind rival Redondo who holds the No. 8 spot.

Adam Perez led Mira Costa, finishing tenth at 14:48, and was followed by teammates Zach Adler (17th, 15:11), Sammy Nunan (24th, 15:22), Travis Taylor (28th, 15:25), Nico Pappas (31st, 15:28), Dillon Shambaugh (32nd, 15:30) and Pablo Diaz (50th, 15:45).

In Division 3, top-seeded Palos Verdes and No. 5 West Torrance won their heats. Chadwick placed third in its Division 5 heat to advance to the finals.
