Veterans memorials can be found in all parts of the country. They can be large fountains and sculptures or small monuments and markers and whether they be large or small, their meaning and significance is felt all the more strongly when the names of those honored are known to the neighborhood.
Once such memorial is being planned to honor those from Spearfish, South Dakota and a search is underway for the names of veterans or those who are serving in the U.S. military. The names are going to be engraved on a monument where people can gather to remember their sacrifice, the center of which will be an American flag.
The project has been in the works for nearly five years with more than $100,000 raised toward an estimated $250,000 needed to complete the memorial. The Spearfish Veterans Monument organization is expecting to break ground this July.
If you or someone you know was a resident of Spearfish, South Dakota and is a veteran or active military member, you can submit your name to see if you may be eligible for inclusion on the special granite markers to be installed at Indian Springs Park.
Do you know a veteran or active duty service member? Thank them for their service and submit their story for next week’s AmericanTown’s Hero story.
