AmericanTown’s Heroes: Young Athletes Don’t Let Diabetes Get Them Down

Living with diabetes is a challenge for anyone—young or old, but when children are involved there is always the concern for their future health and safety. Luckily, so much is known these days about how to manage diabetes and diet and exercise are both important to creating a healthy lifestyle.

Aidan Sarmiere and Kyle Rosa are both living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and are both on the Brookfield Barracuda 10U baseball team that recently won the Cal Ripken Connecticut State Tournament.

Thanks to the talent and determination of these boys and their team mates, they progressed to the New England Regional Tournament where they went undefeated before moving on to represent the New England region in the 2015 Cal Ripken 10U World Series in Jonesboro, Arkansas! They are the first team from Brookfield to ever accomplish this.

Both Aidan and Kyle were key contributors to the team’s success in the tournaments. Aidan plays 3rd base and Kyle is the catcher and they both inspire the other players on their team and young athletes who are dealing with the challenges of trying to live a normal, active life while managing T1D.

Do you know someone who has triumphed over a disease or condition and is inspiring others to to do the same? Nominate them for next week’s AmericanTown’s Heroes.
