Don’t just sit there. Do Something! Does that sound familiar? Maybe something your Mom or Dad said when you were spending too much time in the house or in front of the television on a nice day?
DoSomething.org is a unique nonprofit organization that seeks to harness the energy of kids and teens to do any number of things that help people and communities around the world. Things like donating jeans to homeless youth, sending cards to shut-in seniors or passing out thumb socks to remind young drivers not to text when they should be paying attention only to the road.
It’s an organization focused on social action and support, helping young people turn their ideas for making the world a better place into a reality. They make it as easy as 1-2-3. You pick a campaign you want to get involved with, follow the action plan and submit a photo showing your success. Boom. You’re done and the world is a better place for your involvement. To make the celebration sweeter, qualified participants are entered to win stuff and even be considered for school scholarships.
The rewards are more than just swag from sponsors. Kids who participate in the campaigns come away with a stronger sense of self and community and with a greater awareness of how we are all connected with each other and the world.
DoSomething.org is not just for kids. They need help from “Old People,” or as they say, “while we are an org for young people, we need the help of former young people,” so they are also calling on parents, teachers, counselors and community leaders to get involved and do something!
Do you know someone who is actively making their community a better place for young and old alike? Nominate them for next week’s AmericanTown’s Heroes.
